A conflict of interest arises when personal, financial, professional, or other relationships could reasonably be perceived to influence the objectivity, integrity, or perceived integrity of engineering research, editorial decisions, or publication processes. gjaest is committed to identifying and managing such conflicts to maintain the highest standards of academic and professional transparency.
Financial interests encompass several areas, including current or recent employment relationships, consulting arrangements, and contracts. Authors must also disclose stock or equity holdings, patent applications or royalties, and payments for lectures, presentations, or services such as honoraria. All sources and amounts of research funding must be clearly stated. Professional relationships involve advisory roles, leadership positions in professional societies, and collaborative research initiatives. Mentorship relationships, such as student-mentor connections, and competitive engineering relationships must also be disclosed. Personal relationships that require disclosure include family member connections, close personal ties, romantic or intimate relationships, and significant friendship or community social relationships that could influence professional judgment.
The Editor-in-Chief carries specific disclosure obligations to lead by example in transparency. These include the disclosure of any personal conflicts of interest and institutional conflicts that could arise from their primary affiliations. Honest errors, while serious, are distinguished from misconduct and are handled with understanding while maintaining research integrity.
Retraction may be necessary due to violations of publication ethics: failure to obtain proper ethical approvals; inadequate informed consent procedures; breach of participant confidentiality; and failure to disclose significant conflicts of interest. These violations undermine trust in the research process and may necessitate article removal.
